Is Lojack Laptop theft protection worth it?

LoJack is actually a really clever bit of software. Not only will formatting not remove the software, but if someone does manage to remove it from the hard drive, it can be remotely automatically re-installed, proving near impossible to get rid of. Absolute LoJack works very closely with police, especially in America & has recently celebrated its 5000th successful return. It also has a remote data delete function if the device stolen has sensitive information on it. If the worse comes to the worse & it is thought the device won’t be returned, all information & operating system can be destroyed rendering the device unusable. It’s becoming a very popular product globally & is likely that in the future every single computer made will contain the software available for tracking.

Lojack Laptop will not prevent someone from wiping the disk. Despite what the “question” says, nobody is remotely installing anything on a drive which has been low-level formatted.

If the drive is password protected (in firmware), the thief can replace the drive for less than the cost of a laptop. The data is protected, but not by Lojack.

So in my opinion Lojack Laptop is about as effective as a car alarm. A knowledgeable thief is only inconvenienced.

One’s best protection against theft is to not let the laptop out of your site, keep current backups of data, and have theft insurance to replace the hardware in case it is stolen.
